Mercor AI Interview: Questions and Prep

6 min read

Prepare for the Mercor AI interview with its current process, practice questions, retake rules, technical checklist, and responsible AI-use guidance.

The Mercor AI interview is a role-specific recorded conversation. According to Mercor's current interview guide, the interviewer asks questions, creates a transcript and evaluates the result for the listing. Most interviews take about 20 minutes, although the length can vary.

The best preparation is not collecting someone else's exact questions. It is being able to explain every relevant line of your resume, defend your decisions and stay specific when the interviewer follows up.

What is the Mercor AI interview process?

Mercor's documented process has several details worth knowing before you start:

  • The questions are tied to the role or interview type.
  • A completed interview can carry over when another application requires the same assessment.
  • The free practice interview is separate from applications and can be taken repeatedly.
  • An official interview can currently be retaken up to three times across the applications connected to it.
  • Retaking resets application progress, and the waiting room says hiring managers can see the retake count.
  • Some interviews require full-screen sharing or include a whiteboard.

That makes the free practice round unusually valuable. Use it to learn the pace, confirm that the interviewer hears you and find weak answers before an official attempt counts.

Mercor AI interview questions to practise

Mercor asks candidates not to publish specific interview questions. The prompts below are original practice questions based on the capabilities its guide says interviews may assess; they are not a leaked question bank.

Resume and experience

  • Which project on your resume best represents your fit for this role?
  • What did you personally own, and what belonged to the wider team?
  • Which result can you quantify, and how was it measured?
  • What is the most technically difficult claim on your resume to defend?

Decisions and trade-offs

  • Describe a decision you made before all the information was available.
  • When did speed matter more than completeness, and what risk did you accept?
  • Tell me about an approach you rejected. Why was it worse?
  • What would you change if you repeated the work today?

Domain depth

  • Explain a difficult concept from your field to a smart non-specialist.
  • How do you distinguish high-quality work from an answer that only sounds confident?
  • What failure mode do inexperienced people in your field often miss?
  • How would you evaluate an AI-generated answer in your area of expertise?

Communication and reflection

  • Tell me about a project that went wrong and the signal you missed.
  • Describe a disagreement and how the final decision was made.
  • What feedback changed how you work?
  • Where is your experience weaker than this role ideally requires?

For each prompt, prepare the first answer and two layers of follow-up. If your story collapses when asked "why?", it is not ready.

How to answer Mercor AI interview questions

Start with the answer instead of its history. Then use a concrete example:

I chose the staged migration because the rollback risk was more important than finishing in one release. I owned the data validation and rollout plan. We moved the first 10 percent of traffic, found one compatibility issue, and completed the migration with no customer-visible outage.

That answer supplies a decision, ownership, evidence and outcome. The interviewer has useful follow-ups to ask, and you have real detail available when it does.

Use STAR as a scaffold for behavioural examples, but do not spend half the answer on the situation. Mercor's own guide recommends clear, succinct answers and warns that prolonged pauses can cause the interviewer to interject.

A five-step Mercor preparation plan

  1. Audit your resume. Highlight every claim related to the role. Add the number, tool, decision and result you would use to defend it.
  2. Build three reusable stories. Prepare a win, a difficult recovery and a judgment call.
  3. Practise technical explanations aloud. A correct idea that cannot be explained clearly will not produce a useful transcript.
  4. Take Mercor's free practice interview. Repeat it until your equipment and answer length feel routine.
  5. Review the role and rules immediately before the official attempt. Do not spend a retake discovering a browser, microphone or screen-sharing problem.

If you have a week, combine this with the full seven-day interview plan.

Mercor camera, microphone and browser checklist

Mercor currently recommends the latest Chrome, with recent Edge and Safari also supported. Firefox and mobile browsers are not supported. Before the interview:

  • Complete every required setup check in the waiting room.
  • Test the microphone, speakers and camera that the browser actually selected.
  • Keep your full face visible and light it from the front.
  • Use a stable connection and a quiet room.
  • If screen sharing is requested, share the entire screen rather than one tab.
  • If the AI interrupts a pause, say that you were not finished.
  • Ask it to repeat or clarify a question you did not hear correctly.

If the session freezes or loses connection, follow the recovery steps in the official guide rather than repeatedly opening new sessions.

How do Mercor AI interview retakes work?

Mercor currently permits up to three official retakes for an interview. A retake resets application progress and its count may be visible to hiring managers, so treat it as a limited recovery option rather than a practice mode.

After a weak attempt, write down the specific problem: audio, answer structure, missing domain knowledge or an unsupported resume claim. Fix that problem and run another practice interview before selecting Retake assessment.

Can you use ChatGPT or an AI assistant?

Mercor's LLM usage policy currently allows limited grammar and wording help but prohibits using an LLM to compose responses, generate rationales, evaluate model answers or predict code behaviour. It also says candidates should keep their own ideas and voice.

Use AI before the interview to challenge your resume, generate mock follow-ups and review your practice transcript. During the official assessment, follow Mercor's rules. Do not use InterviewShadow or another live assistant to compose an answer where the policy prohibits it.

The AI help versus cheating guide explains how to make that decision for other platforms.

Mercor AI interview preparation checklist

  • Every role-relevant resume claim has an example and result.
  • Three strong stories have been spoken aloud, not only written.
  • The free Mercor practice interview has been completed.
  • Chrome, camera, microphone, speakers and connection have been tested.
  • You know whether full-screen sharing or a whiteboard is required.
  • The current interview and LLM policies have been read.
  • You have a clear plan for pauses, clarification and technical recovery.

Preparation should make the official attempt feel familiar. It should not make your answers sound borrowed.

Review your practice answer before the official attempt

Use this self-check after a mock answer. It is our preparation exercise, not Mercor's scoring rubric or a prediction of a hiring decision.

CheckWhat to listen for
Direct answerYour first sentence addresses the question
OwnershipYou distinguish your action from the team's work
DecisionYou explain why you chose the approach
EvidenceThe result is observable and you can explain how you know
Follow-upYou can discuss a trade-off without inventing missing detail

Pick the weakest part and answer again once. If the problem is missing domain knowledge, research and practise it before repeating the entire mock. If it is structure, use a complete STAR example as a scaffold while keeping the facts your own.
